Navily

Navily is an innovative startup in the field of boating and maritime tourism, founded in 2014 by Edouard Fiess and Benjamin Rousseau, two sailing enthusiasts. The name 'Navily' derives from 'The Navigation Family', underlining the goal of creating a community of navigators.

The Navily app is designed to help boaters find and book moorings in ports around the world quickly and intuitively. With a vast network of more than 600 ports distributed in various countries, Navily offers users detailed information about the ports, including comments and photos sent by the users themselves.

Scenario

Before Soraia's intervention, Navily faced a series of significant challenges:

  • Manual Comment Moderation: The comment moderation process required significant time and human resources, slowing down the ability to provide quick responses and ensure a platform free of inappropriate content.
  • Moderation of Images Uploaded by Users: Similarly, moderating images submitted by users was a task prone to human error, with the risk of missing inappropriate or poor quality images.
  • Satellite Image Analysis for Detailed Information: Analyzing satellite images to obtain detailed information about ports, such as wind protection and type of seabed, was a manual and expensive process.
  • Retrieving Information from Google Maps: Searching for and acquiring information from Google Maps, such as port websites, telephone numbers and emails, required manual work that could be improved in terms of efficiency and precision.

These challenges resulted in a limited user experience, with often incomplete or outdated information about ports, and with a risk of unmoderated or poor quality content that compromised the reputation and security of the Navily platform.

Methodology

  • Data analysis and manipulation: Analyze existing data related to comments, images, and positions to identify patterns and moderation criteria.
  • Development of AI workflows: Create AI-based workflows using Make and prompt engineering to automate the moderation process.
  • Stress test: Subject workflows to a rigorous stress test using real user data to ensure the correctness and effectiveness of requests and results.
  • Integration into production: Support the IT team in integrating workflows into production, ensuring an efficient and accurate implementation.

Solution

The solution proposed by Soraia to face Navily's challenges is based on the implementation of an automated and intelligent system for content moderation and information retrieval. This includes:

  • Automatic Content Moderation: By introducing an AI-based system to automatically moderate user comments and uploaded images, Navily can automatically identify and flag inappropriate content, reducing the workload of manual moderation.
  • Automatic Information Retrieval from Google Maps: Using API and scraping, Navily can automate the retrieval of crucial information from ports on Google Maps, such as websites, telephone numbers and email addresses. This information is then integrated directly into the Navily platform for greater completeness and ease of access for users.
  • Automatic Analysis of Satellite Images: By integrating satellite image analysis algorithms, Navily is able to extract detailed information on ports, such as wind protection and the type of seabed. This information is presented to users for a better planning of their nautical activities.

Results

The implementation of the solution proposed by Soraia has led to a series of positive results and significant improvements for Navily. First, the introduction of automatic content moderation has significantly reduced the workload associated with manual moderation, allowing the team to focus on more strategic tasks. This has improved the overall operational efficiency of the platform, reducing response times to users and ensuring faster and more effective management of inappropriate content.

Second, the automatic retrieval of information from Google Maps has enriched Navily with crucial port data, such as websites, telephone numbers and email addresses, as well as providing detailed information such as wind protection and the type of seabed. This has increased the completeness of the information available on the platform, providing users with quick and easy access to resources useful for planning their nautical activities.
